Nokia Siemens Networks: Trust Thyself ...

... after filtering significant research.

Matador,

<< Do not trust research. >>

I wouldn't touch that standalone statement with a ten foot pole, and unless I were seated beside you at a Pub with a frothy pint facing me. I will say though, that on it's face, and without significant qualification, I do not consider it to be one of your more astute utterances.

<< this is the nice view >>

We always have you to present a gloomy view. <ggg>

<< Ovum sells research and can't be harsh on the deal. >>

They are an above average respected source for research in this sector, and they can and should be as harsh as they would like to be. If they are not capable of that, they shouldn't be in the business they are in.

In the very short "Euroview Comment" Ovum's Dan Bieler provided his take on two 'Networks' presentations and face to face meetings and exposure to three of the four top Nokia Siemens Networks executives at Capital Market Days this last week, and shaped his comments around four intelligent questions that need to be addressed at this stage of pre-merger. He did a good job with it, IMO.

I didn't have the benefit of face to face, but personally, I had a positive reaction to both Networks presentations and the Q&A, and having been through mergers and acquisitions on the acquiring side, and the acquired side, I am extremely mindful of the challenges that Simon Beresford-Wylie (CEO), Mika Vehviläinen (COO), Christopher Castelitz (CMO), and Peter Schönhofer (CFO) [see post that follows this one for profiles] face in leading and integrating the new company that will commence merged operation in Q1 and as early as January 1 hopefully, as targeted.

Simon Beresford-Wylie is a very impressive individual with a command presence and he instills confidence. He certainly appears to me to be the right man for the job. If I had to make a choice of an individual to lead a communications behemoth with over 50,000 employees (starting at ~60,000), I'd take him over Patricia Russo in a heartbeat, and in so far as challenges go, Patricia is going to face much larger ones putting together a faded and tarnished former US telecoms giant, the less than world-class UMTS unit of Nortel, and a powerful French one.

BTW: Did I observe you recently saying you are now managing an Alcatel (Alcatel-Lucent) project?

In the following post are profiles of the executive team of Nokia Siemens Networks by one of the more competent journalists covering wireless, and make sure to check out the role of John "Stumpy" Pepys.

Best,

- Eric -
