Doug, How exactly will a 4S server benefit relatively more from the upgrade than a 2S server? Other than simpler 4S systems from an extra HT link, I can't think of anything. And when you factor in the relative size of both markets, and more importantly, the fact that competition is most fierce *below* 4S, I think it is clear that this is being tossed out as an excuse to cover what will be a slow ramp of difficult-to-yield parts. Why provide an excuse at all? There's really no need for one.

I think you are the one characterizing it as an excuse. It also fits within the three food group pyramid, server, nb, desktop, top down thingey. The most expensive chip in the most expensive product/socket.

Concerning yield there must be some fuseable link salvage of the also rans.

You don't think 4 socket servers are more likely to be used in situations where Barcelona's capabilities would be more fully utilised? Not to mention to make more money for AMD, especially while production ramps? I guess Intel should stop selling all those quad core Xeons, and just sell them as consumer Core 2 Quads, eh?

Now you're in denial, either that or you have blinders on.

Doug,

How exactly will a 4S server benefit relatively more from the upgrade than a 2S server? Other than simpler 4S systems from an extra HT link, I can't think of anything. And when you factor in the relative size of both markets, and more importantly, the fact that competition is most fierce *below* 4S, I think it is clear that this is being tossed out as an excuse to cover what will be a slow ramp of difficult-to-yield parts.

I think the point in the article that 8xxx will launch before 2xxx is wrong. But, the point that Socket 1207 Barcelonas (low volume) before Socket AM2 (high volume) is right.

I actually did miss the point that you caught, which is that 4S servers will (can) use 3 links to connect all processors, therefore 4S servers do actually benefit a lot from Barcelona, with similar benefit as 1S servers.
