Oooh, very good post, especially on the moderation algorithm.

Doug,

The reason insults escalate is:

Actually, the reason insults escalate is because Rink is not chained to his laptop and moderating 24/7...

People who feel that they've been insulted often times become angry and angry people lack patience. Many don't wait a reasonable amount of time (24 hours) for Rink to exit his real life and screen posts for such content. Often times it is next to impossible for people to wait 1/2 hour before launching back with a response. There is no moderator and no rule change that will prevent this from happening. The answer is not very simple because we are in a 2 dimensional world in which we cannot convey humor through sarcasm and expect every poster to "get it". Some will get the humor, some will think an attack has been initiated. Every poster on the moderated board should follow this very simple rule... If a poster feels insulted, he/she should immediately stop the thread and point the insult out to Rink and await Rink's judgement. Anyone that responds to an insult with an insult is AS GUILTY if not MORE GUILTY than the original poster (the original post simply might have been misunderstood...) and deserves whatever he/she gets. The rules of the moderated board are pretty clear cut and there is nothing there that allows for a less than courteous post when responding to another less than courteous post. If everyone behaved according to the rules of the board rather than looking for some sort of grey area or line that can be crossed based on the discretion of the moderator, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Anyone that chooses to flaunt the rules of the board and then start pointing fingers around and using the "everyone else does it" excuse is simply WRONG... Rink is 1 person and he's human. He WILL make mistakes and he WILL show various degrees of subconscious bias based upon his views. Anyone who flaunts the rules of the board and expects Rink's judgement to be perfect is quite simply WRONG... People should post in such a way as to show their appreciation for the difficult job that Rink has------COURTEOUSLY... Arguing with Rink is the equivalent of arguing balls and strikes with a parent who volunteered to be umpire. Everyone may not perceive Rink to be fair, but, he is as fair as is humanly possible and I can't imagine anyone else doing any better...and I can certainly imagine worse...

Please...let's all give Rink a break and take it upon ourselves to moderate ourselves...

Scott
