That a tax hike in gas will reduce the consumption of gas, reducing our dependence on oil. A lot of people argue that this would be horribly ruinous to our economy. But the truth is we can tax the crap out of luxury vehicles like Hummers and other consumer gas guzzlers. The owners won't like it but it won't break their bank either. Then you use that money to provide credits to people who drive efficient cars, which are typically driven by people with less money. You can also use the tax revenues on research for alternative energy. Anyway, that is the gist of John's idea.
