Since Putin has an actual domestic approval rating around 80% doing what he does, I wouldn't put much store in governments who struggle to keep their own approval ratings over 50% masterminding a hearts and minds campaign.

But you are right about the Cold War parallel in the sense it will be a sometimes adversarial relationship which requires constant management. We will never be able to trust Moscow entirely. On the plus side, their thirst for global influence will be much less than before, as opposed to managing and dominating their physical periphery. IOW, they will lean heavily on the stans but not bother much with Africa, Central America, etc.
