In Nam, there was a mutually threatening external force - North Vietnam. In Iraq, there just isn't any existential threat that is a source of mutual interest. The Shiites know they hold the keys to the kingdom. A point may come when certain elements feel they are strong enough to take it and weather the storm of civil war that follows. I think that point is pretty close.

I changed my mind. We should have offed Sadr.

Had a friend who trained police in Iraq as a civilian contractor. He really enjoyed his time when he was in the Kurds area. People were nice and friendly and covered the Americans backs. He did say you better carry a gun in their area, they think you're nuts if you don't.
