Florida's march to the SEC championship impressed voters and, in turn, the computers enough to bump the team ahead of Michigan and into the No. 2 spot in the final BCS standings behind the undefeated Buckeyes. The Gators and Buckeyes will square off in the title game Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz. The Wolverines, meanwhile, will be relegated to the Rose Bowl presented by Citi where they will face USC. The Trojans had what appeared to be a clear path to the national championship before stumbling in their regular season finale at UCLA. Reaction as to whether Florida or Michigan deserves to play for the title is sure to be split. Meyer said after beating the Razorbacks. "I'm going to need help with that one." Michigan, though it doesn't boast the same beefy schedule, has a narrow 42-39 loss against Ohio State on Nov. 18 in Columbus to its credit. But that was the Wolverines' last action, and the Gators have since posted wins at Florida State and over then-No. 8 Arkansas in the SEC championship. Wolverines head coach Lloyd Carr chose not to campaign for his team. "I think it's going to be a great controversy, I don't care who gets selected," Carr told a weekly Michigan TV show earlier Sunday, "because I just think that based on some of the comments the Florida coach has made in the last two weeks -- campaigning strenuously for a berth in the championship game -- and making some statements about Michigan that I think were inappropriate. "That certainly is going to stir a controversy and who knows what that's going to lead to." The Gators moved into the No. 2 spot in the USA Today Top 25 coaches' poll earlier Sunday, the first indication that they would also supplant Michigan in the all-important No. 2-slot in the BCS. Ohio State has been ranked No. 1 all season and improved to 12-0 after beating Michigan. Head coach Jim Tressel abstained from voting in the final coaches' poll in an effort to quell any potential controversy.
