I would like to see teachers get merit pay, so the good ones prosper and the poor ones drop out. For some reason, the teacher's unions oppose that.

We can't pay good teachers enough and we can't fire bad teachers. I think it's OK to have some average teachers, but teachers like those depicted in "Stand And Deliver" and some recent films are priceless and should be rewarded accordingly.

It seems that the teachers depicted in those films came to teaching from an outside profession, which doesn't speak well for teacher's colleges and universities.

My daughter's degree is in education. Her classroom methods professor had never taught in a primary classroom, and her methods were frankly bullshit.

Fortunately, my daughter has her own capabilities and was able to control a class of more than 40 kids. I wouldn't be close to handling that. I'd probably 'strangle [figure of speech]' some of them before the first day was out.
