I don't think it's a sign of cowardice to eschew using the n word. People are still alive who remember lynchings, I don't think they want to hear it.

Years ago I was joking around with a buddy who was a black guy and I used the word. He froze for a split second and there was no laughter in his face. Then we commenced laughing and joking again. He didn't say so, but I could tell he didn't like it. Maybe black people wonder if you use the word when they're not around.

Also, that academic who used the word 'niggardly' in a room full of black people was a real blockhead. How insensitive is that? It wouldn't be wrong to interpret it as a provocation, I don't care what it means.
