I don't think there were any when he was in El Paso, he was quite the recluse.

He had a few cronies he hung out with in EP, mostly lawyers.

His research for his Southwest books was impeccable. I grew up in that part of the world; his description of people and places in West Texas and No. Mexico is spot on accurate, down to the church with the falling down belfry in The Crossing in which the conversation with the recluse reveals more about McCarthy than anything else he has thus far written. The church is in No. Mexico at a tiny thumbprint of an abandoned town whose name I have long ago forgotten.

When he mentions a place and its name, you can book the fact that he got it right and then some. He has obviously spent a lot time making sure that the settings for his works are completely authentic. I admire this aspect of his craft very much.

You might enjoy this site; a few good things mixed in with a lot of BS, kinda like SI. vbg
