No reason to disagree with your sentiment. However, if you haven't yet done so, you really should read "Juicing the Game" by Howard Bryant, a Boston sports writer. He makes a compelling argument that the game was compromised at all levels by most players taking steroids, not just a few home run hitters.

I think the most underreported story is the number of pitchers that were juicing in the 1990s and beyond. 25 years ago, Goose Gossage was a monster throwing 93 mph. Nowadays, every team has a couple of middle relievers throwing in the mid-90s. That is more than good training, in my opinion.
