I thought you were talking about calibration. But, ok. Still, types of pollen grains in lake varves, along with diatoms can give you a good idea of temperature in an area. As does other evidence. So there is more to go on than just ice cores. Indications are that NA, especially the West, was cooler and dryer during the Medieval Warm period in Europe. Greenland seems to have been about like now.
