How do I make coal?
Bury a tree in a swamp and wait a million years.

TP gave you a wimpy answer :>)

(I used a book; I'm not this smart)

Da fossilized remains of plants growing in da swamps millions of years ago, or buried sunshine. (I calls dem bogs, on account of bog cutters).
Trees topple over and fall into the oxygen deficient muck, so that they don't rot. They pile up, and then rivers wash sand and silt into the swamp, compressing the vegetation, and driving out the moisture and other impurities. As the bog gets buried deeper and deeper, heat and time change the chemistry of the plants.First peat, which is converted to brown coal. After millions of years this becomes bituminous coal. More pressure, more heat, more time, and more impurities removed, and it becomes anthracite.

coal formation.......

chemistry.anl.gov

To form one meter of bituminous coal requires
between 6000-9000 years of sedimentation, and many coal seams
are many meters thick.
