One of the odder aspects of this involved a community leader who could be charming, combative, rather nasty, seductively persuasive, and authoritarian. It all worked together reasonably well. Until the listserv came along and the nasty side of him showed up regularly in posts. Sherry Turkle at MIT had some early studies of the variety of ways the internet increased the range of selves we all display, particularly when they were unconnected to any face to face interaction possibility. There are several famous cases of deception. Some classic males pretending to be females pretending to be males. And some with certain disabilities which turn out later to be faked.
