the dell 2407 is native 1920x1200 so the dvi-d on the ati card is supposed to be required to make that look its best.

If by DVI-D you mean dual link, than no, that's not correct. Just about all the 1920x1200 monitors work with single link.

FYI:

I think DVI-D stands for digital - as in cable. Meaning that the cable has only digital connection, lacking analog. DVI-I has digital and analog.

Dual link means that you have 2 separate sets of digital connectors to support very high definitions.

Currently, only higher end cards support Dual-link. None of the cheap integrated solutions do.

BTW, since you mentioned looking its best, maybe you meant digital vs. analog (connection between graphics card and monitor). Yeah, you definitely need digital. Analog looks like crap in comparison. So when buying even the cheapest PC / mobo with integrated video, it is important that it has DVI connection.
