AMD has simply chosen to include a mobile feature in its desktop chip. Intel could do the same, if they wanted to.

jspeed -- the idle power difference between Intel and AMD at idle is more like 10 watts. Add 2-3 watts for fan than multiply that by 1.8 to cover the regulators and power supply running near their worst efficiency levels.

The result is 22.5 watts. My PC draws 105 watts at idle, but is not as enery efficient as the 65nm AMD CPUs. (90nm early dual core). It has a 7600 GT PCIe graphics card, two hard disks (power saving not enabled) and 2G of DDR2. So I would guess that a more typical AMD based (65nm) PC (1G DDR2, 1 HD, integrated graphics) uses 80W of power at idle, which would mean that the same PC with a C2D would use 102.5 watts.

I have never seen my PC draw more than 165w even when decryping DVD's using both cores 100%. That happens about 1% of the time and it never happens in a typical office.

I think it's safe to say that your average 2007 PC in a typical home or office environment uses on average 120W or even less, so a savings of 22.5 watts is significant, and also saves 10db of noise.

Of couse, for laptops, 10w is almost an insurmoutable penalty and I expect AMD to resume its market share gain for laptops in Q1. Ditto mini PCs.
