I would use a come-along with a moly cable not a poly cable. <G>

Some rope is a good idea. But the plan is to use bikes that are not too heavy (my brother is keen on a semi-offroad bike powered by a Yamaha 660 single, and it makes sense for us all to ride the same model, to minimize the quantity of spares we need to carry), and there will be at least 3 of us. My wife, who is from Peru, says we shouldn't have less than 4 people - too vulnerable to bandits otherwise. So getting stuck in the mud will probably be the least of our problems.
