I think the charities that do call you, and send the innumerable junk mail items, have an almost impossible task not to do that- and on top of that, you are paying for them to do it to other people, even if they DO take you seriously. I recommend finding charities that spend most of their money on actual work, rather than having a hefty budget for solicitation. I don't want to name names- but there are plenty of charities, especially at the local level, that spend almost everything on the actual charitable activity. Soup kitchens, for example, in most cities are VERY efficient.
