It's a big chip because something is wrong with the 65nm process.

Rev G DC 65nm (512K L2 per core) is ~125mm^2

Multiply by 2: 250 mm^2.

Add 2MB of L3, double the FP on each core, a little (negative) tweaking for the duplicated HT/memory controller, and voila, ~300mm^2.
