I loved the project- I can't say whether it's valid or not. I do agree with you though, that money is not the root of happiness. I think security is- and in most societies it is your connection to other people which allows for your security, not money. A rich but atomized family must, imo, be more insecure than a working class but fully connected family. I think it's all about how far you can fall; how well you understand the risks of your position in society; how much you fear losing your position in society; and how many people you perceive will help you if you do fall. Given those metrics it makes sense that someone with a large support system would be happier than someone without one, even if they are poorer, and perhaps the further you have to fall in society, the scarier the height may be. But I would love to see studies on that. I certainly am making nothing but idle speculations.
