Barry Goldwater was a true conservative. And he felt very strongly as the Founding Fathers did that the religious right has NO RIGHT to tell anyone how to be moral, or to meddle in politics and government.

Our government was set up to keep orthodox religious zealots OUT, not invite them in. The founding fathers had seem church controlling government for centuries in Europe and in every case freedom and democracy were diminished. Only by keeping a strong barrier between church and state can our democracy survive. In fact our Founding Fathers were not even christians, they were deists. Jefferson didn't even believe Christ existed, and couldn't stand preachers and ministers. But the religious right and people like Bill O'Reilly lie about this all the time.

Barry Goldwater also forbid government from meddling in personal private medical decisions, like abortions and deathbed decisions. Barry even encouraged and paid for his own daughter to get an abortion when she was knocked up. He felt strongly that government and especially MEN do not have a right to tell women what they can do with their reproductive systems. Anymore than women have a right to tell a man what to do with his penis.

Barry was also an honest campaigner, a proponent of bi-partisan debate and partnership. He was not corrupt. He was someone conservatives should be proud of and try and emulate. But something bad happened to the conservative movement along the way. Maybe starting with Nixon and his bag of dirty tricks.
