But as a rule there are far more good shops then bad.

Those are the kind of shops that will get my repeat business and as many referrals as I can send them.

You cannot buy a good reputation like you earned for being honest. There are shop rules to contend with. If ownership wants to maximize revenue, then the mechanics are instructed to find additional work. For example, the business model at oil change places is to upsell wiper blades, and air filters.

I knew a mechanic that was very good, but you had to watch him like a hawk or he would take advantage. He left town eventually.

Some shops also give the mechanic a percentage of upselling revenue, thus making it harder for the mechanic to keep the interests of the customer paramount.
