Well, to be fair, the military portion of the Iraq war has been well planned and fought. It is the job of the military to defeat an enemy army in the field, and our military did a great job.

The part of this 'war' that was completely fouled up was fouled up by the politicians - specifically, the Republicans (this time - the Democrats had their shot in Vietnam). Poor post-war planning, a complete lack of understanding of the social structure of Iraq, and total blunders got us into this situation. Nearly all of these blunders were perpetrated by the civilian leadership of the Bush administration - and I include Rumsfeld in that 'civilian' leadership because of his gross incompetence and inability to listen to any competent military advice.

The first post-invasion years of this war will go down in history as one of the most incompetent examples of 'nation building' in history. We went in with an almost child-like plan - that we would liberate the people from the evil Saddam, and they would throw flowers at our feet and peacefully convert to an American style democracy. We literally sent children in - young, idealistic Neo-neocons who didn't have a clue about Iraq or how to build a nation. These children completely failed to rebuild Iraq, and did a large part towards losing us this 'war'.

Notice how the authors of this disaster - Perle, Wolfowitz, etc - have not only scurried away from the mess, but now claim no responsibility in its making. They blame the disaster on 'poor execution', when it is obvious that the overall grand 'plan' took almost none of the reality on the ground into account. These men are the mirrors of those who told LBJ that Vietnam was a 'must win' battle.

The Republicans had total control - over the Congress, the President, and the military - and royally screwed it up. The blame lies squarely at their feet - to say otherwise is spin and revisionism. Is it a sign of our rapidly moving times that we start the history revisionism even before the story is complete?
