No, what mas has legitimately taken crap for is the suggestion that AMD will sell parts with 3 working cores, instead of jumping down to DC if all 4 cores are not functional.

Uhhh, and how is that different than what we're talking about?

And what exactly is wrong with tri-core? What, can't wrap your mind around the fact that computers can deal with numbers that aren't powers of two?

Hint: 3 > 2.

Edit: Hint #2: A smart multi-threaded programming technique is to not care how many threads are executing simultaneously, only that threads can be executed simultaneously. It's called "portability."
