I have a coconut shell "basket" which had a handle and lid on a hinge, with a little flower painting on it with the words "Pitcairn, Ever True", which I inherited from my grandmother whose family lived there in the late 19th century. I might even have residency rights though I suspect it's more like a sympathetic vote than "rights". I really like the idea of Norfolk Island independence as originally given by Queen Victoria who liked the idea of Pitcairn as being an "experiment". The Pitcairners all moved to Norfolk Island in 1856 [I think that's the year] and set up base there. Some moved back to Pitcairn [people love "home"]. Norfolk Island has a higher GDP per person [they don't really have capitas] than Australia and a lot higher than NZ. It's also a nice place though there was a murder for the first time in something like a century other than a mother killing her baby [in distress, obviously]. It's not tropical, but reasonably warm [unlike here]. But there isn't a lot of the facilities that we have here so a lot of modern services and supplies need to be outsourced. An ambulance to Auckland or Australia would be expensive and so would treatment. But one doesn't often need an ambulance. I'm pretty sure they have cellphones. Certainly, Globalstar covers there and Globalstar Australia is the supplier. I don't know if there are any Globalstar phones currently in use on the island. I'm due to do a trip there soon [with niece and maybe son and one or two others] to sort it out and see what it's like up close and personal. So far, from quite a bit of cyberspace review, I like what I see. Mqurice
