Yep, just like a souped up PIII (Conroe) beating A64 by 20% in clock-for-clock performance was wishful thinking too.

It's not just Intel that has to prove they can compete in that market. AMD has yet to prove they can successfully compete against NVIDIA in the discrete graphics market. How long will it take AMD to regain the market share they've already lost since the AMD-ATI merger rumors started?

In the next few years Intel could begin sucking the lifeblood of the that market by flooding it with low- to mid-range range cards. There are plenty of bundling opportunities given Intel's large market share advantage in CPUs and chipsets. Intel's pockets are far deeper than AMD's, and I believe they would accept a modest to moderate loss on the discrete graphics business as long as it also punished AMD financially.
