Your premise proceeds from a flawed assumption....the GWOT is being fought in Afghanistan and Iraq...and across Europe and Asia...in many ways seen and unseen. Iraq is not the only front in this struggle.

Iraq was a situation which was allowed to fester for too long.

Excellent question, and here's why:

We had to take the fight somewhere and Iraq was the ideal place... sadam insane violated all 19 of the 1991 U.N. Peace Accords, it was time to enforce the Agreement or roll over and play dead, should we have just played dead? I don't think so... that's why... so, Iraq is where it is, but don't forget we also went into Afghanistan... this fight is not like WWII, this fight will take a generation because their entire generation has been raised on hating America and what we represent... those cowardly europeans have nothing to do but mock us because they lack the balls and the brains, much like in WWII, to fight their own fight...
