"Maybe I should be asking CJ but how the hell did Bush beat Ann Richards?"

Interesting question. Ann had a high job approval rating through the day of the election. Now true, there were those persistent rumors, no one knows who from, of her lesbianism, drug and alcohol use. Besides, he said he had plans on what to do with the budget surpluses and promised a tax cut. And he appealed to the evangelicals. Besides, he seemed like a guy you could go out and drink a beer with. Ann, while great with jokes, would probably want to tell you about improving the schools or attracting technology jobs to Texas. No danger of that with Dubya.

"Maybe I should be asking CJ but how the hell did Bush beat Ann Richards? She was GREAT."

I lived there then. Bush sounded much less like a dumb redneck, actually did fairly well in the debate against Richards. He himself always treated her like a lady, but Rove had his minions out putting out that Richards was a little too "gay friendly" - which isn't a popular thing to be in much of Texas.

Richards was a sort of a disappointment, promising to take on the insurance industry in Texas, and then doing nothing. I think Bush promised to cut taxes too. That, and just being a man did it.
