Although it will be seen as a win for Dollar Bill Jefferson, the enmity to Carter of ultrconservative Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee was the key.

Lee detests Carter, and properly so. She is believed to be a black racist.

With Lee vociferously fighting against her, Carter could not win.

But here's the real reason: Jefferson will undoubtedly be indicted and be forced to resign. At that point, the Jefferson Parish politicos, mostly white, will have a huge say in who gets to be his replacement. If Carter had been elected, an Orleans Parish black politician would have had the seat for as long as she wanted it. And lots of folks are sick of corrupt Orleans Parish black politicos.

It was not love of Jefferson that got him re-elected, it was the opportunity to have a major say-so in his replacement that tanked Carter.

Politics makes for strange bedfellows.
