It could have worked if George W. had a brain.

If he had avoided Iraq and demanded fiscal discipline he could have pretty much locked up that perpetual Republican Majority that Rove had imagined.

Yes, Rove corralled the religious conservatives with the help of Ralph Reed types, then had GW Bush clean up his image and pretend to be Born Again.

In one GW biography, it says that the writer has never met anyone who knows GW (amongst dozens he interviewed) who has ever seen GW act pious unless it's a political event with religious conservatives around him. So the whole thing could be a big act. We also know that behind the scenes some of the top GOP operators refer to the religious right as "the wackos" whom they see as pawns they can control by throwing crumbs to.

GW Bush owes the "wackos" his presidency, along with the tricks of Rove and a few other things. In 2000 it was the "wackos" who spread the smears against McCain to make sure he lost the SC primary after McCain has thrashed Bush in New Hampshire. In fact, it may be that McCain was the real GOP favorite in 2000, and that the smear campaign stole democracy from the GOP itself.

PS: Ralph Reed is now known to be guilty of taking large bribes from Enron and Abramoff, which shows you how genuine a "religious" person he is too.
