I highly doubt the discrepancy between the number of sunni's and the number of shi'a can qaulify or disqualify weather or not they have a civil war going on there. I could understand that if there were 20 Sunni's living in iraq. Although there are a lot more shi'a, there are still plenty of Sunni's. With that said, I don't really think it matters how we classify the sectarian strife in that country.

As far as the dems and repubs bearing equal responsibility for voting for this war. That is like saying, hey, you voted for it and you are as responsible as we are for it. Don't concern yourself that we may have ignored good intellegence and cherry picked other intellegence and that up to this point you have not had the power to investigate the pre-war intellegence. If you choose to believe that statement you made, that is your business Hawk. It used to be my problem but that ended about a month ago. And I would expect by this time next year, we will all understand the intellegence issue much more thoughrouly, weather or not we want to.

As for that one civil war we have a vested interest in promoting to find that compromise between relgious beliefs and scientific discovery. That is a concept created in the west, not the ME. They are all way to religious in the ME. I see no struggle between the lines you have drawn. There struggle is simple, either more religious ideologicals or those nasty more liberal leanings. Personally, I think liberalism will always win, it won in this country and it is winning again in this country. And when it wins, science tends to follow. But it all does come down to freedom and there is not much of that going on in the ME. And if we are bringing it to them via Iraq, I doubt we will see the fuits of our efforts for decades, if ever. Once again, not that it could not have happened, but when you try delivering it with loaded guns, you better mean it. And when the message is being delivered by certified ChickenHawks from Bush and Cheney all the way down to hanniety, limbaugh and culter, you see what we get. A deeply devided country with the pro war side supporting the war from every location other than the battle field. That is where your problem lies.

Our country would do well to seek out religious progressives in the ME and spend good bucks supporting them and doing this intellegently. That along with covert military actions would surely reward us well and to help usher in a new age to the ME.
It doesn't happen over night. And it surely does not happen with 140K troops in a country they have no business being in.
