The GOP is the one with the problem in 2008. McCain's position on Iraq (double the amount of troops) is both unpopular and totally unrealistic. Even if we wanted to send such troops we don't have them available. That really hurts McCain, along with his support for Bush at crucial times when he could have been a maverick instead.

Guiliani is a non-starter. I'm not sure which states he could win in a national election, if any. Probably not his home state.SO where?

Mitt Romney is attractive looking but boy is he guilty of pandering and hypocrisy. He's trying to appeal to evangelicals, but it's backfiring, and evangelicals hate Mormons.

I agree, Hillary is not the best Dem candidate and Obama should probably wait for 2016, but Obama would make a terrific VP and bring out tens of millions of new voters without costing the top of the ticket. Dems then have a half dozen top white male candidates, plus Richardson. Kerry, Gore and Biden are are all quite acceptable to about 60% of the country, and are all highly qualified.

Obama is perhaps the most charismatic political leader in modern US history, certainly since Clinton. He can charm a crowd as well as Bill or Reagan or any of them ever have. The only question I have is that he needs more experience and could afford to wait. Also the sleazy GOP racist ad which knocked off Harold Ford shows that there are still too many racist voters, though Tennessee is not a typical state, it's one of the top five or six most racist.

The GOP don't have any charismatic charmer candidates. None. They don't have anyone with a positive message either.

There is euphoria among democrats over having an alternative to Hillary. Time will show Osama (or whatever Kennedy called him) to be a lightweight.
