I see your point. I think the average pint of water in the river Thames is used seven times over before it is discharged into the sea. Maybe if I lived in a city I would find an alternative from the main supply for drinking water. The filtration systems used by the water authorities is of a much superior grade then anything you can buy in the store though.

In Scotland, the spring water from the reservoir is almost always as clean as it can get.
