Central banking doesn't work for long because there is simply no way that a disinterested party can make rational economic decisions via proxy on behalf of interested parties. Only you know what you want, what you need, and what you are willing to pay. A central bank does decide what you want, and what you need, it is not just acting as a clearing house.
