New York advertising man Dave Gilmartin authored the book subtitled "From the Truly Miserable to the Just Plain Awful." The book lists his 50 picks in alphabetical order. Aberdeen in Grays Harbor County is one of two Washington cities mentioned in the book. Gilmartin's book says the cultural highlights of Aberdeen include: sulking, moping, rain, and abandoned storefronts. Aberdeen is a logging town with its share of problems dating back to the spotted owl. Everyone agrees there are economic problems, but resident Virginia Holm says the city has some good qualities, too. "It's a good city, it's a good place to raise kids," she said. "You've got to go out of town to buy anything major or big. But the town itself doesn't suck." Aberdeen resident Taunja Turpin agrees with her neighbor. I caught up with Turpin at Wal-Mart, the place Gilmartin calls the "cultural heart of Aberdeen." "Not all the time, I've lived here all my life and it hasn't been that bad to me," she said. The Mayor, Dorothy Voege, says Aberdeen is one nice small city. She brags about the past, the present and the future. She thinks the book is bogus. "I think it's a lot of baloney," she said. Voege says several stronger words could describe Gilmartin's book, but she chose not to use them. "I'm a nice Methodist girl or I could describe it better," she said. Sure, I did find some who think the town sucks, but long-time resident Stanley Laaksonen isn't one of them. "Lived here for 80 years... Yeah, I wouldn't go to Seattle for all the money in China, I've seen the traffic jams up there and I like this," he said. Laaksonen didn't realize at the time that Seattle was the second Washington city to be listed as among the absolute worst. The book called Seattle overrated, overcast and overcaffeinated. Gilmartin says two other Washington cities, Forks and Vancouver, barely missed the cut. He calls Forks "a festering wound of a town", and Vancouver "methamphetamine junkie haven."
