Back to my original question : .. Why ?

My question :
Is there a distinct disadvantage in having ATI/AMD as a merger rather than an aquisition ?

A merger wouldn't have cost AMD a penny IMO.
Is this just a question of "ego" in terms of "who" runs the company from then on ? .. or are there more serious factors involved ?

IMO, with a merger, they could have :
1) agreed on sharing the BOD between AMD/ATI execs using ca. revenues as a benchmark
2) saved the 5.4 Bio$
3) kept the name "AMD"
4) avoided all the negative WS spin on the 5.4 Bio$
5) i.e. improved their financial situation versus an aquisition

Am I wrong on any of those points ?
