Frank,

'Production' is a relative term. Internet2's Abilene network became production on day 2 right after we built it. Its about user and data experimentation, not network or protocol experimentation.

This is why the original vendors and engineering teams left the project (or at least stopped active work) by 1998. It was all about getting a better internet for free.

NLR was started to do network and protocol experimentation and Internet2 has sort of responded with their HOPI network, but they relied on NLR lambdas. Recently they got their own fiber and lit it to break completely from NLR.

However - they still do not do experiments on the network itself. The network is avante garde - but is operated as a production entity for the benefit of the research running on it as content.
