I don't think that Syria and Iran have a vested interest in "helping the young democracy survive"....at least not as it is currently formulated.

But the President is stuck. He won't talk to Syria and Iran directly. But he wants them involved in the iraq equation. How will their interests be represented if not in direct talks with the U.S.? Sunni Syria talking to...? Shiite Iran talking to...Maliki? Al Sadr?

A bit tough to see this playing out along the lines the President indicates should happen.
