Obama's Christian faith is great so long as he's kept his nose clean since snorting coke as a teenager (which he admits).
But many serious christians are unfortunately also very conservative when it comes to racial questions, whether they admit it or are even aware of it or not. Check out how many churches are voluntarily segregated. Most of them are. Even liberal churches.

What this really all boils down to is race. A taboo subject but let's face it head-on. Apply directly where it hurts. This country of ours has been racist or split on racism since its inception. Our cultural divide started over slavery more than anything. Our upper classes are almost pure white. And many of them want to keep it that way.

Even liberal people know deep-down that racism is real. When whites see Tiger Woods winning over and over. When blacks see Eminem or Larry Bird winning big. They all cringe. Especially when whites we see a black guy get a beautiful white girl. It makes millions of people uneasy. Maybe tens of millions. Maybe most of the country. Hard to count because people would never admit it.

When school vouchers, illegal immigration, welfare and affirmative action become hot-button issues, that's all about race. When Stephen Colbert jokes about "my black friend" there's a serious side to it. While we hope it disappears in time and we detest racism, we also cannot deny it's real. Same as when JFK almost lost for the simple reason that he was Catholic. Those who break the barriers first are seen as heros but there is always a lot of resistance to them getting there.

I was also depressed when I saw Harold Ford get beaten with a racist ad. In fact Ford, if he were married to a black woman with kids would be every bit as good a non-white candidate as Obama. But he lost because of one ad. Though Illinois is one of the easiest states to get elected as a black, and Tennessee one of the more difficult. But what about the states in the middle? What about Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, even Florida? And whatg about bluish states which there are few non-whites, like Iowa, Maine, Colorado and New Hampshire?

If we were talking about 2016, then no debate. By then there should be an additional few million more non-white voters versus whites, especially a lot more Hispanics. And Hispanics may see Obama as a hero. Hopefully they would. But now? It's a tricky question. And a real concern.

What I want to see is how the rightwing views Obama, what they are really thinking and saying privately. Is he someone they hope Dems nominate or not? Maybe they don't know either. But they sure as hell know whjat kind of smears to run, at least with their sleazy 527's. Then I want to see Obama vetted in political battle. See how he takes the hits. Because they will come, in droves. Major politics is a full contact sport.

Where I see Obama having real credibility will be at a global level. The conversations about him are becoming very interesting.
