Thanks Sioux. Yes, I am thinking about people like my cousins in the midwest. Traditional conservatives who are fairly open minded but only liberal to a degree.

If you get those people you win.

They are not rightwingers, but they are only moderately tolerant of change. They are not hip. Just nice folks. Clinton won them over because he sounded like a Methodist minister, but a white Methodist minister. They liked GW Bush at first because he seems to be "down-home" like them, moderate and likeable. But to ask them to vote for a black or half-black candidate no matter how great the guy is, that's pushing it. But for VP they might take the plunge. Like they could have voted for Bush-Powell. Same goes with a female candidate which is why I don't think Hillary should run. She's not the right type of woman for these people. But these swing voters might accept a non-controversial woman as VP.
