Obama's name and race are obvious drawbacks to running for president. His wife is a positive. If he were married to a white woman, forget about it.

Keep in mind, that only Illinois and Massachusetts have ever even elected a black to major statewide office. We are not at the end of the racial equality curve yet, we are a lot better off that 30-40 years ago, but still something like 60% of the country would oppose a minority president, or a woman, even if they'd never admit it publicly, or to a pollster.

That said, I think the country is ready for a black or woman VP.
But only the right one. Colin Powell might have gotten that if Bush had picked him.

One step at a time here. I'm just mirroring the nation, not expressing any personal prejudice.

AS keeps mentioning that Obama is black. Is it because his facial feature is more black than white? His mother is white from Kansas. His stephfather is Indonesian, and Obama grew up in Jakarta as a youngster and when to school in that country.

Tiger Woods is black even though his mother is Thai. With every PGA win, his background keeps changing, American Indian blood, white heritage, and sooner or later he declares himself as white. What's wrong of just being yourself? Although I am not black, I have many black friends who I admire.

Let's not take this race issue. Remember Fujimora was elected president (sadly enough).
