<People have to get their checks in the mail PRONTO to avoid late fees.>

I actually believe they run deliberate tricks and scams. My normal credit card billing cycle ran on the 10th, and I pay it all. Just use the card to collect points.

When I was travelling in Turkey in November, I just figured I'd come home, with twelve days to spare, and calmly pay it. Instead, the card company, Chase, just arbitrarily changed the due date to the 2nd. I got back on the 29th, and slept until the 30th.

Then when I dealt with the bill, they clearly had trapped me, as first I had a good size bill, and two days to pay it. Because most of my money is in Treasury Direct, and I leave small balances in checking account, I was planning on releasing the cash to pay it on the Thursday 7th (when Treasuries mature). Well, it wasn't there, so I had to scramble to make an online payment before their new due date. I barely made it, and only was able to pay half the bill. I paid the balance on the 7th, but they were able to almost nail me with the late fee, plus they collected double digit interest rates for a week on the unpaid portion. That's the first time that's happened to me in almost a decade.

I think what these assholes do, is pick up on the fact people are abroad, and take advantage of the logistical problems of moving money and paying bills, and just deliberately pull a switcheroo.

Just pay your bill online. I charge whatever I can on my Chase Rewards Perfect Card. I get 3% off on all gas purchases and 1% off everything else. I never have been hit with interest charges/late fees. Online (electronic, ACH) banking is great. I even use it to transfer money over to my brokerage accounts for free in a day.

I use NorthFork (NFB) when I'm in the US.

I find that only some of the Healthcare Insurance Companies are backward and don't accept credit card or electronic payment.

The less paper (and wires) I have around, the better.
