McCain was also defeated by a smear campaign in 2000, run by similar people. I don't hear anyuone blaming him for that. In fact he's probably the GOP nominee unless Romney can stop him.

Kerry underestimated both the size of the smear campaign and the amount of free air time the MSM would give those liars. By the time he realized what was happening, it was too late to do much. However, the first day after the smearvets surfaced, Kerry made a strong statement against them, got McCain to do the same, then sent Cleland and his boat mates out to attack the smearvets. Unfortunately, that didn't work.

But Kerry came very close to beating Bush. How close we may never know. He might have even beatene him, minus the Ohio cheating.

No war-time president has ever lost a re-election. Nixon beat McGovern by 20% despite the unpopular Vietnam war. It's very difficult.
