the weakness represented by TI should already be reflected in their numbers

With the trend toward 3G, and specifically, toward WCDMA, perhaps one reason for lower guidance from TI is that it is losing market share in chips to QCOM. This is just a conjecture on my part, but it appears that the price and performance of QCOM chips for WCDMA is better than for similar TI chips.

Do you think the infringement decision of the ITC against QCOM can actually be circumvented by QCOM with its own design? More specifically, if there is a work around, can QCOM and BRCM then settle other patent issues in which QCOM claims infringement by BRCM? The feeling I'm getting is that as chips become more complex, there are more opportunities for infringement (accidental or intentional), and more challenges for different firms to resolve these issues before the public loses interest in getting the latest and best technology.

An interview with the head of the GSM association that provides some interesting details about the "3G for all" initiative.

telecomtv.com

- Started with 9 companies in the competition and are now in detailed negotiations with 4 of them. The winner will be announced at 3GSM in Barcelona.

- Hopes to have a $100 handset as the winner. The other handsets in the competition will also help bring down the cost of 3G handsets across the board.

- Described the winner as having "millions of handsets" going through their distribution channels.
