Clinton let Gingrich shut down the government, then won the standoff and made Gingrich capitulate to his balanced budget policies. Which included tax hikes. Then we had a great sustainable surplus-producing boom. That's the hard truth. The GOP had nothing to do with the surpluses during the Clinton era. In fact they fought them tooth and nail. And proof is the last six years where every single tax cut has been passed while spending rises and wars are fought on the national credit carfd. The GOP loves huge deficits. Every GOP presdient has had them going back to Nixon. reagan's were huge. GW Bush's are astronominal.
