Imperial Sugar Declares Special $3 Per Share Dividend, Shares Surge

SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) -- Imperial Sugar Co., one of the largest sugar refiners in the U.S., on Tuesday declared a special dividend of $3 per share after swinging to fourth-quarter and year-end profits.
The dividend is payable Jan. 5, to shareholders of record on Dec. 26.

"In recognition of these very strong operating results and our strong financial position, including a substantial amount of cash and large inventory levels that are expected to be reduced during the current quarter, our board of directors has declared a $3 special dividend," Robert A. Peiser, Imperial Sugar's president and chief executive, said in a release.

Shares of Imperial Sugar added $3.47, or 15 percent, to $26.54 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.
