Clinton plants a mangrove (tree, not forest)

newscientist.com

Bill Clinton became the poster child for yet another good cause on Saturday, when he planted a mangrove tree in Phucket, Thailand, to launch the World Conservation Union's Mangroves for the Future initiative.

A 2005 UNEP report suggested that areas in South-East Asia where mangrove forests had not been degraded by human activities had suffered less damage from the December 2004 tsunami (see Natural barriers reduced tsunami devastation).

Good on Clinton. But I can't help thinking it's a pity that it takes nearly 200,000 people dying to highlight the advantages of preserving our environment. Climate change will kill in a much more subtle fashion, which is why it doesn't solicit such immediate action.
