SIA's Scalise warns of tight supply of memory ICs

LONDON — George Scalise, president of the Semiconductor Industry Association, has warned that there are signs that memory chips are coming into tight supply due to strong demand for chips.

Scalise issued the warning in a commentary on the global sales of semiconductor for November 2006, announced by his organization on Tuesday (Jan. 2) and only one month after he had warned that "a slowing economy could impact sales of semiconductors in the coming months."

In this month's announcement of November sales Scalise said: "Inventories are in line with current demand in most major product segments, and there are even signs of tight supplies in some memory products."

"Global sales of semiconductors for the first 11 months of 2006 are in line with the SIA forecast of 9.4 percent growth for the year. 2007 is shaping up to be another good year for the industry with a forecast of 10 percent growth over 2006," Scalise concluded.
