Not correct. You can get them in all the colors you want in theory. In real life red, yellow, green, blue and white are all available and a 1 watt white LED is enough to light up a whole normal size room.
That white light, however, being real white may not be as pleasant as a warm old style bulb.

The secret lies in the driving electronic but that has also been solved, check for instance supertex.com . Their patented driving method was invented by a German friend of mine.

The LEDs rated at 100,000 hrs life burn for ever. Also I have been told that insects cannot see that pure white, add that to the lifetime and you know while LED is becoming the preferred light source for buildings.
The cost may still be on the high side but as volume ramps up that should also become a non issue.
