Most Americans dont feel comfortable voting for a black or woman president. This is true especially in crucial heartland swing states. I'm not sure why, that's just the way it is. But most won't admit it because it shows they're sexist or racist. Surprisingly, even most women prefer a male president. At least in this country.

Therefore, any woman or candidate of color has a built-in disadvantage going in. But as a VP candidate these is much less controversy. Therefore that is where they should start in terms of breaking the color or sex barrier.
